Nudge

By: Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein

About: Nudge is about how we make choices and how we can make better ones. Using dozens of examples and drawing on decades of behavioural science research, the authors show that no choice is ever presented to us in a neutral way, and that we are all susceptible to biases that can lead us to make bad decisions[7].

Why good for procurement: By knowing how people think, we can use “choice architecture” to nudge people toward certain decisions which can be useful when trying to negotiate for certain outcomes. It can also be used to set up certain cues for your procurement teams to optimize their behaviour. Obviously, nudge theory should be used ethically and responsibly.

Quotes from the book: “The first misconception is that it is possible to avoid influencing people’s choices.[8]

It’s not about you.[11]
